Boat Repair - Trim and Tilt Motor & Reservoir

Expert: Everett Peacock - 10/21/2009

Question
The trim motor stopped working on my 2002/200HP Merc. and the outside of the case was Magnetized. After removing, I took it apart and it looked like some water or moisture got in causing a gummy mess. The brush springs had rusted and broken into several pieces. My question is. Where do you think this water/moisture came from and could it also be mixed in with the reservoir fluid? Needless to say, I bought a new motor but afraid to put it on until I know the fluid is OKay. Thinking you in advance for your help.  Jim Stinnett, Clearwater Fl.

Answer
the motor and the pump are two things ...an electric motor connected to a hyd. pump....

an electric motor has these parts... two magnets, brushes, armature,  the armature is the middle shaft, brushes ride on the armature and that sets in  magnetic field   side a magnetic housing..
