Boat Repair - Merc IO Coupler Replacement Clarificaion

Expert: Everett Peacock - 6/13/2009

Question
You had said in an earlier answer that if the coupler is bad you can move the prop while in gear-  this does not make sense to me- how could one manually move the prop while in gear-that would be dangerous?? I am trying to confirm whether mine needs replacing and what should it cost on average? Would you mind clarifying how to check this out? Thank you very much!

Answer
with the boat on the trailer and it not running... in forward you should only be able to turn the prop one way..it will click when turning it..if you try to turn it the other way it should not move... because you are tying to turn the engine also.... if the coupler is bad it will be freeer to turn because the connection between the two is bad... the coupler....any mor email me at  docksidemarine12@aol.com
