Boat Repair - Merc 250 260hp

Expert: Everett Peacock - 7/29/2009

Question
I have an 87 Searay 230 c.c. with a 260hp merc, the other day I was coming in off the bay(fresh water). Boat was running like a champ at about 4200 rpm for about 6 miles then started acting like it was out of gas and stalled. Tried to start it back up and it would start an stall. Got towed to the launch and the boat started fine and I was able to pull it into the dock. Got it home an pulled the sending unit out and there's over a 1/4 tank of fuel. Changed the water separator a week prior when it happened before and drained the fuel into a glass jar...no water
Same thing happened a week earlier, and after it stalled it started back up, but I was only able to idle back to the dock, every time I tried to give it throttle in would bog down.
At the start of this season I replaced the starter and alternator, changed oil and replace spark plugs. could it be cap/rotor...coil? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
 Thanks,
    Larry

Answer
it sounds like a fuel problem....try to run on a portable tank to make sure the inboard tank is ok.. there is a fitting on the tank ...anti-syphon vale where the hose connect to the tank...also check you plugs for water..maybe the elbow or manifold is leaking water in to cylinders...
