Boat Repair - Motor won't turn over

Expert: Everett Peacock - 8/8/2009

Question
Everett, I have a 1971 65hp evinrude outboard and the motor won't turn over.  I changed the spark plugs and battery and replaced all with new ones.  When ignition switch is turned on the motor makes a click and humming noise.  Any idea why the motor won't turn over?

Answer
with the engine cover off look at the starter when you try to crank it..the click you hear is the starter solenoid,  the humm may be the starter, see if it turns at all when you try to start it..if you take a volt meter and put it on the side of the solenoid that goes to the starter it should have 12 volts when starting...if it has voltage replace the starter...also check the battery cables to make sure the a tight and not corroded....good luck..
