Boat Repair - lower unit

Question
i have a 1973 65 hp evinrude. the gears, im assuming, are all to pieces in the lower unit. because it is hung in gear and it looses power and i did not know till now that i have been running it with no oil in LU.but now the damage is done and i'm trying to get to the gears. how can i get to them? i've tried removing water pump and removing 4 bolts under it, but cant figure out how to get it out.

Answer
your best bet is to get another gearcase to replace it with..the bearing carrier has a cpl of bolts in it.. remove them and the carrier " in front of the prop.." if the gears are ground up you will have to reshim all gears...with the carrier out and reverse gear out remove the pinion nut and the driveshaft should come out..then you can get to forward gear...
