I belive I sheared off the shift shaft, it looks like it is made of brass, I have a piece that looks like an L, and it is sheared off going into the lower unit.

the lower unit has a splines shift shaft...that is a coupler that slides over the splines of the shift shaft and counnects in the shift shaft slide assambly that should be facing forward when assembling..the drive on the boat..  drive must be in forward when it is installed or removed.  in  forward the upper shift shaft is straight when installing .
