Just installed new water pump on a 95 40 hp mercury tracker pro series motor, can't get unit to slide up all the way into place, it stops about 1/2" from coming together. What is the final adjustment to get it to slide further up?

if the splines are lined up on the shift shaft and the driveshaft it should go on...put both items in neutral....while holding th3e lower unit up turn the flywhee to align the drive shaft....with every thing in neutral the shift shaft should be aligned..
