Boat Repair/Mercruiser lower unit noise

Question
I have a 2004 Bayliner 175.  Ran fine last time used.  Started it up after a couple of months of no use (stored in heated garage). When put in gear, a grinding noise is heard before it is in gear. Does not matter if done fast or not.  Also, sometimes stalls when put in gear.  Any thoughts?

Answer
First off yes there should be a swift quick movement going in and out of gear, forward and reverse,,,  The stalling is the momentary kill switch that kills the engine for a split second when coming out of gear,, that releaves the strain on the gears so it can shift out of gear with our roundng the clutch dog and gear ramps..Sounds like the lower shift cable needs to be replaced..over time this cable gets stiff and engauges the switch...when you have the cable replaced replace the shift cable bellows also..
