Question
ihave a merc 224 cid with a thermstat of 160 i was told it start open at 160 and fully open at 185 what should the temp be is 185 to 190 to hot thanks bob

Answer
The Mercury marine built 4 cylinder engine is equipped with closed cooling and should run very close to 180 degrees. remember the boat's gauges are not known to be very accurate, just a reference point. You should check the temp with a quality meter, shop gauge or even a meat thermometer.
