Question
Jeff; I have a 1984 235 hp evinrude. I cannot get the idle down on the motor. it idles about 2000 rpm and i'm afraid of a run-away. I understand this motor has to be synronized. any ideas on how to lower the idle?

Answer
Dennis, you will need a good service manual to properly set the linkages. However there is an idle speed screw on the throttle arm. Try backing it off to lower the idle.
Where the linkage from each carb attachés to the others are some adjusting screws that adjust the throttle plates. Close the throttle, loosen the screws and adjust the plates so they are all closed. Tighten the screw. Now open the throttle to wide open (motor off!) and look in the carbs to ensure the throttle plates are parallel.
That motor is a great motor but needs proper sync. I also would recommend using a fuel system treatment designed to remove carbon for the combustion chamber and around the pistons. Always use a good quality gas. You may also want to back the timing down 2 degrees.
A service manual and following the procedures will make for a better running motor. Let me know.
