Question
QUESTION: Hello Brad, My quesion is simple, are lateral raises good exercises to increase shoulder muscle mass or barbell shoulder press is better? if neither is good what is the best exercise to increase shoulder muscle mass (get a wider shoulder)?
thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Mido,

When in doubt, presses are always better than isolation movements.  Bench Presses are better than flies, squats are better than leg extensions, deadlifts are better than hyperextensions and overhead barbell presses are better than lateral raises.

However, for a complete well rounded program, you should do both.  Presses first, heavy and strict, then laterals.  This is a sure recipe for good shoulder developement.

Good Luck Mido!!

QUESTION: hi brad, thank you very much for your response. I just wanna know what is the exact work that lateral raises do? do they hypertrophy the muscle or hust shape it? because im a medical student and i dont have time to do a lot of workouts. thank you very much again...

Answer
Hello again Mido,

I'm afraid I don't really understand your question.  When ever you apply overload to a muscle the response is hyertrophy.  It does not matter if the overload is applied in a compound fashion, like in a press, or in an isolation fashion, like in a lateral.  The result is hypertrophy.  I am sure you understand the principles of hypertrophy from you A+P classes in pre-med so I wont go into that.  However, I am not quite sure what you mean my "Shaping" a muscle, so you will have to excuse me there.

The purpose of a lateral raise is to use the deltoid soley to abduct the humerus.  Hence the name "isolation" exercise.  In a press, the deltoid abducts the humerus while the triceps strighted the elbow joint to raise the bar up over the head.  BOth muscles are used, hence the name "compound" exercise.

I don't know if that helps you or not, in any case, really study the priciples of overload, hypertrophy and the physiology of hypertrophy.  Keep an open mind and never stop learning.
