Question
Please answer my doubts, because I think I am overtraining and this may have bad consequences.

Hi, I've been lifting for about two years but in the past months I've noticed that I'm getting smaller and thinner. I train 5-6 days a week and I know that maybe this is causing me muscle loss because I don't give my muscles time to rest and make more muscular mass during this period. I've heard an advice from another trainer in this site and I want to know your opinion. He says I should only lift very heavy once in a week and the other days I should be lifting with light weights; also stretch and do cardio every day. My doubts are the following:
1. If I lift weights, even if they are light, should I workout until I'm completely exhausted like in the heavy lifting day?
2. How much cardio should I do?
3. Crunches count as lifting? I have to do them every day?
4. The "resting days" include cardio, light lifting and some crunches?
5. What about periodization?

Hello Alberto,

After having read your question I see nothing in your approach to nutrition.  How you fuel your body is THE most important part of either gaining muscle or losing fat.  Without sound nutrition, your efforts are cut down to 30% or less.  When weight training, you are quite literally tearing the muscles.  Food is how your body repairs those muscles.  So without food, how does your body repair them?  THey don't, you just keep tearing them down and they never build back up.  Pretty soon your muscles just quit responding all together and before long, you'll have a pretty serious injury.

You made no mention of your weight or body fat so I can not form an opinion of how much food you need to eat.  However, I can point you in the directon of a good nutritional calculator.  Log on to www.ast-ss.com and punch your info into thier FREE nutrition calculator.  With just a few simple mouse clicks, you will get the amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fat needed for you to grow muscle and not too much unwanted body fat.

I have won 3 overall titles with the ABA/INBA and several class wins. In August 2008 I won the Overall title for the INBF Washington State Natural Bodybuilding Championships earning my WNBF Pro Card. I have owned and operated "Healthy Bodies Fitness" in Portola, CA for 6 years. During that time I have taught literally hundreds of clients in nearly every way. You name it and I have used it as an avenue for coaching/teaching. One on one personal training, seminars, 10 week challenges, week long courses, group training, step aerobics, what ever it takes to spread the word of health and fitness and keep my business thriving in a small community. I have also authored a book "Design your own NUTRITION" which is being represented by ST Literary Agency.

Education/Credentials
My background is in Health Care. I earned my Bachelors in Radiologic Science and have worked in Diagnostic Imaging for 13 years, thus my vast knowledge of anatomy. I also hold my personal training certification with IDEA Health and Fitness Association. The rest of my knowledge comes from frequently reading the journals of The American College of Sports Medicine and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. There are other journals out there, but those are my favorites.
