How did Pernell Roberts leave Bonanza.  Did the writers marry him off or what happened?

Answer
The character of Adam was going to be married off but he stayed on for one more year. Instead he was said to have gone to sea (like his father and grandfather had).  In the season after he left there was one episode where Ben mentioned writing to Adam.  After that he was never really mentioned.
