Question
what are coupons.

Answer
In the "old days" even back to the '80s, you had to clip coupons off a bonds and send them in to get payments.  The coupons stated how much interest you were due at each date.
Almost everything now is electronic, and coupon refers to the interest rate a bond pays (even though you no longer have to cut it and send it in).
