Bonsai - Cuttings during winter

Expert: BonsaiOutlet.com - 10/20/2009

Question
Hi,
I had another question on my cuttings. Now that winter is just around the corner I am not sure what to do with my tree cuttings. Some say it is good to keep them inside so the roots can grow, but I have heard others say that the plants will need that hibernation during winter. Do you think that my plants (without any roots yet) can survive unprotected in my garage with temperatures below freezing and colder. My plants include birch, juniper, pine, maple, and other random bushes in my yard. Thanks a lot!

Answer
Hello,

The goal is to emulate the trees natural growing environment. I'm not an expert with cuttings, but i'm not sure now is the optimal time. However, if I were to try growing a tree from cuttings, this time of year, i would keep them protected indoors. But, i'm not sure if these outdoor trees will thrive indoors.

You really should consider posting your questions on the learning2Bonsai.com community. There's a guy on the community called BonsaiMark and he's grown millions of bonsai through cuttings. He'll definately be able to answer your questions.

I'm sorry for not being helpful with your cutting questions.

Enjoy your day,
