I was just cruising thru this web site and noticed this post.  This sounds like a book I read several years ago --

Night Without End is a thriller novel by Scottish author Alistair MacLean, first published in 1959. The author has been complimented for the excellent depiction of the unforgiving Arctic environment.

I remember really enjoying this book too
