Boston - Cambridge

Question
Hi Nicholas,

Some background: For the past 6 years I've been a Technical Writer here in Orange County, CA. I'm 55 and want to settle down, but I'm having trouble finding a good match; I'm originally from NYC and, if I may put it bluntly, folks on the West Coast seem a bit too superficial for me. Also, there is a lack of community, and I dislike living in a desert. So I'm contemplating a move back East. I visited the Boston region a few weeks ago and am thinking of moving there. However, I'd feel more comfortable in an easygoing area rather than a high-energy city, so I'm considering a place just outside Boston, such as Cambridge.

1.  Would a car be advantageous, or a liability? It would have been a liability when I lived in Manhattan, but not in Forest Hills, Queens.

2.  When looking for an apartment or a condo, are there resources you can recommend? Do folks use rental agents or brokers?

3.  Can you offer any guidance or suggestions with regard to meeting single women in the area? Or must I walk around with $100 bills falling out of my pockets?

4.  Any comments on the availability of Technical Writer jobs? Or should I forget about the $100 bills?

5.  It was pretty hot and humid when I visited a few weeks ago. Is that typical for summers?

6.  Are there any other issues I ought to look at, that I may be missing?

Nicholas, thank you for your time!

Sorry for the delay here, id' say this overall:

Cambridge is a great place to live, outside of the chaos of the city, nice laid-back, cultural rich area with great people. A car would help, as if you are not downtown, public transportation is still great, but a car can be so much more advantageous when it comes to certain situations.

As for apartment or condos, craigslist will help you find some great listings, and look for it 'by owners' as here you can stay away from brokers. If you are looking to buy, I would stay with a broker, refer to Google and Yelp for the best reviewed brokers.

Single women are rampant in Boston...there's plenty of them. Taking part in the cultural scene and being active, you will no doubt meet other people.

I would refer to indeed.com and craigslist.org for job listings.

Summers are warm, winters are cold; typical Northeast weather.

Let me know if I can be more help.
