The current Conference/Division system was christened by the NBA only in the 1970-71 season, when three expansion teams (Buffalo Braves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers) joined the league bringing the total to 17. The year before the NBA teams were divided into two big divisions, the Eastern Division and the Western Division (they were called “Conferences” from 1970-71 on). From 1971 to 2008 the Boston Celtics have won 17 Atlantic Division titles: in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 2005 and 2008.
