Question
Who was Howie McHugh and what was his relationship to the team?

Answer
Hi Barbara,

Howie McHugh was the first PR man for the Celtics from 1946 until his death in 1983. He was a former All American hockey goalie at Dartmouth and had been hired by hockey aficionado Walter Brown to man the Public Relations of the newborn Boston basketball professional team. He is famous because he was the one pondering with Walter Brown, also the founder of the Boston Celtics, the eventual name of the team, and after some toying with te likes of "Whirlwinds", "Unicorns" and "Olympics", Brown (thank God) hit on "Celtics".
I hope this helps
