Question
Was there a player with the last name O'connell on the active or inactive roster during the early 60's?

Answer
Hi Dan,

Dermott "Dermie" O'Connell played for the Boston Celtics in the late 40's. A Holy Cross alum, he was brought to the Celtics - along with coach Alvin "Doggie" Julian, George Kaftan, Joe Mullaney - to try to capture some of Crusaders' magic and see if Holy Cross' former stars could be marketable at a professional level. The experiment didn't work, coach Julian resigned and the former Holy Cross stars left as soon as Red Auerbach came into town. Dermie O'Connell's stats and headshot are available at the awesome Celtic Nation database:

He was the one and only O'Connell to ever play for the Celtics, so the answer to your question is "no".
I hope this helps
