Question
who were the backup centers for bill russell during his celtics career, and what years were they his backup center? thank you.

Answer
Former Georgetown head coach John Thompson is the most well-known backup to Bill Russell; he played for the Celtics during the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons (where he was nicknamed "The Caddy" in a humorous reference to his role under the great Russell).

Gene Conley (who played both professional baseball and basketball) was also a backup center under Russell, during the 1958-59 through 1960-61 seasons, as well as Clyde Lovellette (1962-63 and 1963-64), Mel Counts (1964-65 and 1965-66), and Wayne Embry (1966-67 and 1967-68).
