Question
my father played on the first boston celtics team from 1946-1952. in fact he was known as the original celtic. his name was arthur spector. my son is doing a report on the history of the boston celtics and we only have one book written by george sullivan. do you have any info you can give us, ie web sites, books or personal knowledge
you can share with us?  thanks for your help.
sincerely, kathryn spector miller

Answer
Arthur "Art" Spector was indeed one of the "original Celtics", as he was part of the franchise's initial roster (1946-47) back when the NBA was known as the Basketball Association of America ... However, he only played four seasons with the Green (up until 1949-50), not 1952.

Wearing jersey number 12, Spector appeared in 169 games for the Celtics, averaging 4.1 points and 2.9 assists per game.

However, if you're looking for information on the team in general, then might I suggest the book "Ever Green" by Dan Shaughnessy :

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0312063482/

It contains a complete history of the Celtics' formative years, up to and including the Larry Bird era ... A great read, and VERY informative.

I would also recommend "The Celtics Encyclopedia" by Peter Bjarkman :

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1582610622/

A little pricier, but it was published recently (1999) so it would have more up-to-date information if that's what you're looking for.

As for web sites, you can always check out the league's official site for the team's history :

http://www.nba.com/celtics/history/index.html

I hope that helps ... And, if you don't mind my asking, how is Mr. Spector doing? Is he still with us?
