Question
Have the Boston Celtics ever had any link with Glasgow Celtic Football Club, the Scottish soccer team formed in 1888? Were the Boston Celtics named after Celtic FC?

Answer
Dear Jonathan,

the only things shared by the Glasgow soccer team and the Boston basketball one is the respect and love for their cities' celtic heritage. Other than that, when Walter Brown, the first owner of the Boston franchise, picked the nickname in 1947, he wanted to pay respect to a former team (the New York Original Celtics) which got basketball off to a new style and pace in the 1920s, bringing the pro game its first national attention in the United States. Others nicknames in Brown's pool were "Whirlwinds" and "Unicorns". Luckily, he decided to go with the "Celtics".
I hope this helps.
