Boston Red Sox/Player Names

Question
Why do the Red Sox  [& Yankees] NOT have their names on the back of their shirts?

Answer
Hi Forrest,

Thanks for writing.

The Yankees are the only team to not have their names on the backs of their home or away uniforms.  The Red Sox have their names on the road uniforms, not the home ones.

It's all about tradition!  Keep in mind that originally uniforms had no names or even numbers on them.  Numbers were introduced to help fans know who the players were.  Names on road uniforms were introduced to help fans know who the opposing players were - it is assumed that a real fan will know his home players by their numbers.

And if they don't... that's why they sell($$) programs at the ballpark.

Best Wishes,

Geoff
