Bowie, David - David Bowie and Morrissey

Expert: Laura Kathryn - 5/14/2006

Question
Dear Laura, I am a huge David Bowie fan, and recently I've also been researching into Morrissey and the Smiths. I heard that Bowie was a fan of Morrissey and asked him to tour with him in the 90's. Morrisey and Bowie were said to have an argument and Morrissey left the tour early, later speaking out against David. I was just wondering if there was any more exact information about this and if Morrissey's song "The National Front Disco" was refering to David Bowie. Thankyou.

Answer
Hello Samantha,

It's true that for a while in 1995 Morrissey was with David Bowie on tour, as he was hired to open for Bowie on his Outside tour. Morrissey withdrew after only two weeks of touring with him though. Morrissey was just an opening act for Bowie and was apparently unsatisfied with this, though there is an excellent version of Marc Bolan's hit Cosmic Dancer preformed live by the two of them together.

The exact reason Morrissey left is a little disputed. While clear he wasn't satisfied being Bowie's opening act,  his assistant at the time claimed it was because "he was very ill with depression. He was coming apart at the seams." However Morrissey himself said it was because Bowie kept insisting he sing one of his songs.

Morrissey has been quoted since then by NME magazine saying this about Bowie, "(He is) not the person he was. He is no longer David Bowie at all. Now he gives people what he thinks will make them happy, and they're yawning their heads off. And by doing that, he is not relevant. He was only relevant by accident."

As for that the song "The National Front Disco", Morrissey claimed the song was about someone he knew who was politically naive, but he did not mention it being about David Bowie.

Hope this has helped!

Laura
