Bowie, David - David's drug use...

Expert: Stefan Westman - 4/24/2007

Question
QUESTION: I am 16 and in high school, and I am doing a very big project on David. I can't seem to find any real info on his abuse. My question(s) are: When did he start? Did he ever get arrested for drugs, How did he quit, and who/what helped him get over it.

It would be much appreciated. Thanks!
ANSWER: David's drug use...

That's because there isn't any real info about it, except the few things David has said about it himself. Which is that he was pretty much out of it from ca 1974-1978. I guess he was introduced to various drugs in the early 70s. I'm not completely sure about him being arrested for drugs, I think he was but acquitted from those charges. The question of who helped him is also unclear, but I guess one who never really gets any attention for being there for him is Coco Schwab. I'm sorry that I couldnt' be of any more help than this.

QUESTION: that is good enough info, but i just thought....what was his drug of choice? I feel silly that I know he had a problem, but which one? Because I have heard several different stories and I don't know which is which.
Thanks again!
ANSWER: Mainly cocaine but I would bet he used speed later on, this in order to do as much as he was doing at the time.

QUESTION: Awesome, thanks. But, do you know if he has a new album coming out? And if he is do you know when? And does he have plans for retiring?
Thanks so much, this is really helpful!
ANSWER: I don't think there are any plans on a new album for the moment, even though I would want one as much as any other bowie-fan. I base this on the fact that he never really recovered from his heart-injury back in 2004. Sure, he has made a few concerts but never anything lengthy, such as a complete show. In some odd way, it feels like he has lost his ability to sing. That sounds hard, but I fear its true. I don't think he  will retire yet. Many thinks he has, because this is the longest period between records. Time will tell what's next. I'm happy unaware on what he is doing, it adds to his mystery if we doesn't know everything.

QUESTION: Heart injury? I didn't know that he had one. What happened?

Answer
He started to complain about chest pains during the last couple of shows in june 2004. He could barely manage the Prague show, but felt better again and completed another show two days later. I guess it was the day after when he was rushed to a hospital in Germany for immediate heart-surgery, don't know the real term for it. Something about a blocked artery. Rumors says it was a really close call. And that's the reason why he hasn't made any new records, tours. I bet you can find more about this on the web.
