Bowling/New Bowler, joining league

Question
QUESTION: I joined my girlfriend's winter bowling league last year and it is starting again on this Tuesday.  My average last year was approximately a 178.  I was told that I need to learn to hook and get myself a ball as opposed to using a house ball.  Well, I am looking to get the ball, and I want to learn to hook.  I don't know what information you need to help me, but: I throw a 15 lb ball, I'm right handed, I like to aim between the center mark and the mark to the right of center.  I throw approximately 11 or 12 m.p.h. according to the scoring board.  If I were to buy a ball, what should I get, where to drill holes, etc.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

ANSWER: Congratulations, 178 average with a house ball is pretty good. Are you a better spare bowler? or do you strike more than spare?

I would buy a 15lb entry level performance ball. The slower speed that you throw would lead me to suggest a shiny ball. The Power Groove series from Brunswick, Tornado line from Ebonite International, or Jazz line from Columbia300 provide a wide range of colors and patterns to choose from. The Tropical Storms would be possibly to strong for your ball speed. The balls will go fairly straight, but as you learn to hook the ball, they can provide some controllable reaction.

Concentrate on learning to deliver the ball consistently first. Trying to get used to a new ball, new fit and trying to hook the ball will cause more confusion than you need. Explain to your driller your intention to learn to hook the ball. A less violent layout will benefit you in the long term.

After a couple weeks, if you feel your getting consistent with the new fit, drop a note and remind me of your last question and we can talk about a few basic elements to lead to creating ball reaction. Good Luck, bowl great in 2008.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I guess more of a spare bowler...hit 9, then spare.  I hit my fair share of turkeys and 4 baggers as well.  Should I go with a lighter ball...I am more of an aim then release...with a guided follow through.  I don't know if people are blowing smoke or if I am decent.  Either way, I enjoy playing.

Answer
Bowling is fun. Bowling every week, every other week, once a month, whatever, is fun.

(In a handicap league) there is no requirement for skill level, so if you'd enjoy bowling with your girlfriend, Just Do It.

If a 15lb works in a house ball, a ball drilled for you will be easier to control. A well fit ball will let go of you! Enjoy.
