Question
When i purchase a ball should the top of my thumb feel the base of the hole with slight tightness.

If you mean the base of your thumb and the top of the hole, yes.

The base of the thumb, not the tip, is the area you should feel the most pressure.  That is the spot on the thumb that you would actually grip with so you would not bend at the knuckle and cause friction and callousing.
