To add to the approach answer (and knowing from your description that you get to the side of the ball)you should also open or 'limp/break' your wrist to allow a more lateral thumb to finger position when you lift. Do this at the bottom of the swing as you come around the ball. It will automatically make you come a bit more 'through' the ball for some better revs.

Hold the ball straight down as if to release it and notice the angle change that doing this will create. I had the exact same problem and it wasn't even a full game later it made the difference immediately.
