Bowling/upgrading old bowling ball
Expert: - 12/17/2008
QuestionQUESTION: I am looking to get a new ball for my wife but am not sure what to go with. She currently uses a very used 14lb brunswick ultimate inferno. She has a 185 avg and in talking to a local pro shop guy he said she is a "tru roller" Not sure what that means. He also said that the ball is drilled wrong for how she rolls it because it tracks over her thumb hole and this will cause a lot of 10 pins. which she does leave a lot. There are so many different balls out there I have no clue what would be a good choice for her. She wants to upgrage but doesn't want something that is dramatically different.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,!
ANSWER: Joe,
Did the shop guy say "Full Roller?" The track (the ball surface in contact with the lane) passes between your wife's fingers and thumb on her ball. You will notice oil lines (or the remnants of the contact). On the Storm website (and all the ball manufacturers) take a look at the master drill sheet, look at example #4 the full roller.(
http://www.stormbowling.com/docs/drill-specs/master.pdf) Is this how your wives ball tracks? Is it drilled like the picture?
The Ultimate has been reissued. Would she like the same reaction she has in a remake of hers? Where did she have it drilled that the operator is suggesting it wasn't drilled right? Did the guy saying it's not right, drill it?
The Ultimate is such a strong cover that I'd expect 10 pins as you play. Solid 10's if the ball hooks too much and weak 10's later in the night, as the cover burns oil off the lane, and the path to the pocket gets drier, if you don't adjust enough.
Let me know more, and we can pare down some choices. Thanks for the questions.

QUESTION: Ok so I checked her ball out and yes she is a full roller. and it is drilled like layout 2 with the pin to the right of the fingers.
AnswerJoe,
Would a stronger version of her Ultimate work? Get another Ultimate and have it drilled for her track (Full Roller).
A stronger core drilled properly, will give her more reaction. The Twisted Fury Solid would give a similar look with it's dull surface (but stronger, drilled right). The layout will look like the image I sent, with the pin down and to the left (about 7:00 o'clock).
Thanks for the question.
