Bowling/Bowling - Speed of the ball vs hook

Question
I've been bowling about two years. I've recently read a techniques book and improved substantially but I am confused about the speed of the ball and the amount of hook I should be getting. I bowl effectively with a low ball speed but my hand comes around the ball. When I practice getting my hand behind the ball on the release, I find that my ball speed increases substantially and my hook is reduced substantially (the power when I strike is also increased). I also find that I am less accurate in hitting the pocket. I find this very frustrating as I am inconsistent and unable to score as high as before. Is this normal? Should I persist or go back to my old technique?

Answer
Tony,
Going around the ball will provide more push downlane and a stronger finish (but lower track).

Going more up the back of the ball, will encourage the ball to start rolling earlier (track will be higher), on the wrong condition the ball will roll to soon and could roll out.

The more time the ball has in contact with the lane, the more potential to achieve friction and hook. The harder you throw, the less time the ball is on the lane, less hook.

You are trying different releases and haven't mastered them yet. Your not as consistent, that's why you practice.

Having more options (skills) is better in the long run. You've only been doing this a short time, give yourself time to master what your working on.

If you are happy with the previous success (be careful, you may be playing an easier part of the lane), use your previous technique. Practice the new release, when needed you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the question. Best of luck.
