Bowling/Having release problems!!!
Expert: - 3/2/2008
QuestionThis is my first year bowling seriously and I am trying to get myself to be versatile. I usually play the lanes different every league night that way I can develop more than one game. I can throw the big hook from the 19 to the 3 and then back. I am really wanting to get away from that and focus more on a straighter line like Norm Duke Brian Voss and Walter Ray. I have noticed my track is really low it is about 3 in. away from my middle finger hole and seems like it is spinning more than getting that side rotation with a little forward roll. What am I doing wrong and is there a way to fix it. Also, what is a good way to develop my game the way I want to and go straighter?
AnswerDerek,
Your lower track usually indicates a late delivery. Your lower track probably works OK on todays Typical House Shot (THS). Your spinning the ball may be the result of fit issues, or late turn of the ball.
The shots you see Duke, Voss and Williams throw are more up the back of the ball, and earlier rolling (a technique that gains friction more quickly). When lane conditions have oil on the outside 10 to 15 boards, gaining earlier friction helps a bowler play "out". The THS doesn't have much oil "out".
In order to learn and practice on the outside you may need to find a PBA practice center and/or a PBA Experience League. Throwing milder bowling balls, depending less on the ball and more on your execution will help develop the skills you want.
Thanks for the question. It's great to hear from someone seeking the skills needed and looking to gain the experience our sport demands. Sometimes bowling looks to easy, but playing on a difficult condition (like the pros do) and accomplishing what you want is very satisfying. Good luck and good bowling.
