QuestionQUESTION: I have a problem with the joint on my middle finger resulting in pain/swelling while and after bowling. Are there any techniques or ways of drilling the bowl that will result in less stress on the joint and possibly reduce/eliminate the symptoms? Thanks mw
ANSWER: Mark,
See a doctor. Relieving pressure with drilling techniques won't fix the problem just let it get worse over time.
Relieve stress with away pitch and non-torquing lateral angles.
Thanks for the question. Fix it early before other problems arise. Good luck.

QUESTION: Appreciate the quick reply - pardon my ignorance but could you describe or define "Relieve stress with away pitch and non-torquing lateral angles" Thanks again
AnswerMark,
Zero pitch is an angle for thumb or fingers drilled directly towards the center of the ball. Away pitch (or reverse), would angle the hole away from the center of the ball. Or simply, the hole will look like it is angled away from the center of your grip.
In some parts of the country (world) the description of the angles of drilled holes in bowling balls are confused (away or toward, reverse or forward, out or in - all describe the same orientation of the hole - either hole, fingers or thumb). Thank the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association (IBPSIA) for getting the world's ball drillers on the same page.
The angle of your finger holes could be causing twisting of your finger(s) as you exit the ball. Too much (or too little) lateral angle, with incorrect forward pitch or reverse pitch will torque on the finger(s) as you exit the ball. The ball should be resting on the pads of your fingers (not on the edges of the holes) as it rolls off. If you feel the ball rubbing on the sides of the fingers as you exit, the lateral pitches can be adjusted to eliminate the rubbing and position your fingers to deliver the ball better (more consistently, with less discomfort, easier).
A Center Line Transposition or CLT will align your fingers with how your hand sits across the ball. You may want to ask your ball driller if they are familiar with the technique. I'd be glad to help them if necessary. E-mail me at revbowl@gmail.com.
Thanks for the question. Hope I was clearer.
