Bowling - Thumb Problems

Expert: Chip Aki - 10/14/2009

Question
Chip,
I asked a question some while back about a bruise under my fingernail. It was answered by Russ and I followed his advise. I changed from Lifts to Ovals and got refitted. My finger pitches needed changing also. I went forward a little at a time until I found something that was comfortable and didn't pinch my finger. I ended up at 7/8F on the middle and 3/4F on the ring.
Now I am having trouble with inconsistency in my thumb. My thumb pitch is currently 1/8R based on my span (4 3/16 x 4 5/16). My question is, should my thumb pitch have changed when I changed my finger pitches? And, if so, in which direction should I start moving?

Thanx,
Darryl

Answer
What kind of inconsistency are you having?  Usually when pitches are changes in one area, they must be changed in other areas to stay compatible.
I would expect you would need to add forward to your thumb or increase the span.

If you dont make changes to the thumb or span, I think there would be issues with holding on to the ball and may require you to squeeze it a bit.

Good luck,
Chip
