Bowling - rotation

Question
Hi Susie,
I have been bowling for two and a half years and would probably be considered a stroker or a tweener.
I currently average 196, however my consistency of rotation of the ball through the oil to the back end is where i believe i fall foul. My line is very consistent but my revs vary enormously - when i achieve higher revs i strike with ease, but i cannot consistently release the ball in such a way as to produce the revs.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mike

Answer
Hi, Michael!

I'm a bit confused by your question. It almost seems as though you are saying that your revs at the back end of the lane are inconsistent rather than the revs off your hand being inconsistent. Those are two very, very different things.

I'll assume you mean that your rev rate off your hand varies. Thumb timing, the moment when your thumb releases from the ball, is critical to a consistent and powerful release. There are usually only three reasons for inconsistency at this moment: an improper fit, fear, or poor leverage. Let's say that you are not worried about having eight-in-a-row or winning the league championship.

Having too much reverse pitch in the thumbhole will cause you to grab the ball. So will having a thumbhole that is too big. You can't do anything you need to do on a consistent basis is your fit is improper. I urge you to see Mark Biondi if you are anywhere close to Stirling Scotland. He has a shop there and is a superb ball driller. Speaking of Mark, he is also a superb coach. If poor leverage and timing is what is causing your rev rate issue, getting a coach is the answer.

I'll be coming to the UK to teach the first week of December. Perhaps I'll see you there!

Susie
