Question
i have gotten into the habit of releasing with a chicken winged elbow.  this has taken a lot off my ball and my games and average has suffered.  any suggestions on how to correct this bad habit?

Answer
Shane,
I've noticed that a chicken winged release is often contributed to by an ill fitting ball. Do you feel your ball fits well?

If the ball can hang in your hand, when you relax your arm with the ball hanging at your side, fit is good. But, if you must exert any grip pressure, your arm muscles involuntarily tense, and when that happens your swing is limited. The elbow bend and misdirected swing are often the result.

If fit is ok, sometimes a loose thumb hole or loose gripping holes (worn finger grips, or loose finger holes) contribute to a feeling that you are about to lose the ball and a bowler will protect the ball from falling off prematurely, by gripping and rolling their wrist/hand.

I've found a one step drill, where you stand near the foul line (or the couch at home) and swing the ball to the top of your backswing and as the ball begins it's downward path, push into your slide, focusing on the point of release. Make sure you can slide forward if you try this at home, and release the ball into pillows or something to stop the forward momentum (before it goes through the TV, or glass door to the deck, etc.!!!!). Practicing your release will help you feel the ball as you grab it, isolating the action helps overcome it.

Thanks for the question. Good luck and good bowling.
