Bowling/full roller drilling
Expert: - 8/13/2009
QuestionQUESTION: i just had my ball drilled for a full roller. i just found out its set up for max hook and backend. i was wondering if their is different ways to put the pin placement so my ball wont hook as much. our local proshop driller told me he doesnt know much about full roller bowlers so we used the diagrams that came with ball and drilled for full roller leverage layout. i just bought a columbia freeze and was wondering if you know of ways to drill for a full roller beside leverage layout. i have high revs and average 14 to 16 miles an hour. i like to play down and in
ANSWER: Chris,
As with most layouts, modifications can be made to get variations of reaction. You didn't say what the other ball was, but the Freeze is a milder ball. Without knowing what the first full roller leverage ball is, I can't suggest something different for the Freeze. Let me know more about what you are rolling. Or...
Have your driller contact me. I'd be glad to help him with a modified layout for your ball. (revbowl@revbowl.com) I can get some of your details (speed, rev rate, etc.) from him. Thanks for the question. Good luck.

QUESTION: the ball i had drilled was a freeze. dropped it off today to get it plugged and redrilled. just wondering where to have pin and cg moved for less hook
ANSWER: Chris,
As I mentioned the layout can be tweaked. Do you want less but earlier? Less and later hook? Just less? Longer later and stronger? Longer later and less?
Explain the shape of your ball reaction. How far down the lane does it skid before starting into it's hook phase? What were the post drilling weights in the ball (Top, side, finger/thumb)? How long a pin (pin to Center of Gravity)is there in the ball? Is it kept at the shiny surface it came with?
Thanks for the follow-up. A little more info and I believe we can get you on the right track. Thanks for your questions.

QUESTION: thanks for your help. the hook on ball is ok. it just keeps going broklin.im left handed and the first pin it hits is the 3 pin. i need a little mor length. would moving the pin right of my middle finger on my ball track and cg in the middle of my span help. the gyro i use is lable drilled for a right hander and hooks perfect. the only problem with the ball is that its all dinged up and is old other than that i would of purchased that ball but the dont make it any more. u have any ball suggestions
AnswerChris,
Stuff like your Gyro is still manufactured. We can discuss it if the Freeze doesn't work out.
Getting the ball longer and cutting down the flare a little, means moving the pin away from the leverage position. If the pin is 3-4 inches I'd move it at least an inch, inch and a half away from the center of grip, but still on a 45 degree angle to the gripline/center of grip. Depending how far the pin is from the CG, you may have some imbalance, put the weight hole beyond the pin past the equator of the ball (it will add top weight back to the ball#.
Lastly, if your still getting a real violent backend reaction, moderate the cover #take the polish off, dull it down one level to 2000 with Abralon and repolish (repeat if needed and take down to 1000). The rougher surface will burn a little energy off and temper down the backend reaction.
Thanks for the question. Let me know how it works.
