Bowling/Do I need a New Bowling Ball?

Question
Hi,

I have been bowling for a little over 2 years now. I am using the same balls that I start with - the Banger "Hole Pounder" Solid and Hole Pounder Pearl. My style is what you would call a "stroker" and I usually stand to the middle or right side of the lanes (I'm right handed) and throw the ball sort of straight, after which it eventually hooks into the pocket. I have had success with these balls but I have been struggling lately and I'm pretty sure its ME and NOT my balls.

However, I notice at my league every week people are buying new balls like crazy. With all of these "super" cores and advanced coverstocks I'm feeling like my balls may be obsolete since Banger Bowling went out of business a few years back and discontinued the bowling balls as well. Despite that, the few reviews that I was able to find on the internet posted by people that have used these balls are great so that made me think about whether I really need a new ball or if I need to learn and master my current balls first.

My question is: are you familiar with the Hole Pounder bowling ball? If so, can I still be competitive on the lanes with these balls if they are in good condition or should I explore purchasing a new ball? Does it really matter or should I be able to make it do what I want it to do with the proper release?

Thanks!

Answer
Floyd,
I am aware of it (the Hole Pounder product line), not familiar with it. If it was working, it should still provide some effect, unless lane conditions, lane surface or oil volume has changed for your league.

Often people change balls without evaluating if things have changed. You are doing the right thing by evaluating if your equipment needs updating. I'd have the local guy/your driller give you an evaluation on the surfaces of your bowling balls. They may need freshening. If outside issues are effecting the balls reaction resurface, sand and or shine might be helpful (depending). Your equipment is only as good as the surfaces.

The greatest engine can't get any power to the road when a car has bald tires. Thanks for the question. Good luck and good bowling.
