Bowling/ball roll

Question
Mr. Aki - Can you help explain what mid-lane roll is compared to a back-end roll.  does this happen because of a person's release?  is it the ball itself?  also, is one type of roll better than the other based on certain lane conditions or is it just a matter of preference?

Answer
Midlane roll can be created by the release, layout, ball surface, or all three.
Midlane roll can help create a more controllable break point and ball reaction, especially on the sport patterns.
Placing the pin below the fingers is a layout tool to help create this type of ball reaction.  Just remember, layouts are based on each bowlers release, so what works for you may look different than what works for someone else.

Good luck,
