Question
Hi, I am relatively new to the bowling scene, but I want my own ball.  What should I look for in a ball.   I am female, 5'4 in height and about 165 in weight.  What weight ball should I get and what brand.  I don't need anything fancy - yet.  Can you help?  Thanks.

Answer
To get the proper weight bowling ball, place the ball in the palm of your bowling hand with the elbow by your side.  If you can hold the ball there for 15-20 seconds, you should be able to use that weight to bowl with.

The first type of ball to look at would be a plastic or polyester ball.  They sell here for 64.95.  They react just like the house balls that bowling centers provide for open play.  They have very little hook potential and pretty much go where you throw them.

If you want to step up to the next level, most ball companies make entry level reactive balls that will give you some hook potential and extra hitting power.  These balls sell here for 100.00-109.95.

Your local pro shop should be able to help you as well.

Good luck,
Chip
