Bowling/Drilling...and redrilling
Expert: Russ King - 7/3/2007
QuestionI bought a Brunswick Fury last weekend and had it drilled at a shop
recommended by the owner of my local house. I bowled about 10 games on
it and went back for a minor adjustment. I felt like my ring finger was a little
long but instead of plugging and redrilling that hole, they plugged, moved
and redrilled the thumb. Once it was completed it felt much better but now I
find it "visually offensive". The orange thumbslug (my choice given the color
of the Fury) is fine but the adjustment required that the hole be drilled off
center and actually cuts into the ball. Even with a minor adjustment, doesn't
this alter the intended set-up and performance? In addition, I now have a
somewhat large orange cresent that is bothering me visually...on my brand
new ball. If he would have just plugged the ring finger hole and redrilled it
instead, I probably wouldn't even notice. This may seem ridiculous but I don't
expect a brand new $200 ball to look like I bought it used and had it
redrilled. And one more minor annoyance would be the knicks taken out of
the cover when he trimmed the grips. I know it's not rolling along that line
but again, a new ball shouldn't look like it was thrown together in a hurry.
Now we're to a point where if it bothers me enought that the thumb will get
slugged (again), but black this time and the ring finger plugged and redrilled
like should have been done all along. Actually, if they'll give me a decent
price, I'd trade it in and have a new Fury drilled by the owner instead. Can I
request that they drill a new ball? Will the performance of the redrilled ball be
sub-par? In their defense, they've offered to lay it out so I'm happy but I'm
now so irritated by the events of the last week that everytime I line up I'll be
annoyed. It doesn't speak to my mental game but it is what it is. I look
forward to any feedback you are willing to provide.
Answer WELL, I WOULD SAY THEY MESSED UP THE BALL ENOUGH TO DO A REDRILL JOB.IT WAS NOT DRILLED CLOSE ENOUGH TO JUST TWEAK THE HOLES.THIS & THE DINGS TAKEN OUT OF THE BALL ARE SUB PAR FOR DRILLING.I WOULD MAKE A STINK ENOUGH TO GET YOUR MONEY BACK,GIVE THEM THE BALL & GO SOME WHERE ELSE.GETTING ANOTHER BALL FROM THEM IS LIKE GOING BACK TO THAT USED CAR DEALER THAT SOLD YOU THAT PIECE OF JUNK & PURCHASING A NOTHER ONE AT A DISCOUNT FROM A BLOATED PRICE.
TRIMMING THE GRIP TOPS SO THEY DONT STICK UP IS THE WRONG WAY!!!!! YOU PUSH THE GRIP FLUSH WITH THE HOLE THEN GLUE.NO TRIMMING!!!THEY HAVE A BEVELED EDGE. TRIMMING LOOSES THE BEVEL.GO TO PBA.COM.
