Bowling/Releasing with a Straight or Caulked
Expert: Chip Aki - 5/25/2007
QuestionGood morning, and hope all is well--
My questions are:
1. I roll with hook roll and fingertip, but my problem is the release. Most of the times I try to come forward in the release with the thumb facing the lanes/pins and upon release try to quickly turn the bowl sidways, but that is causing the ball to spin and across my body--How should I practice to become better in this area? What is correct to accurate this should be accomplished.
2. Should I my fingers be pointed at the pins directly or turned a little to the left?
3. Is it better to point the index finger at your mark or towards the pins?
4. Can you explain what is meant when stated "Holding the ball in a caulked position?"

AnswerIf you want to learn to throw a hook in the easiest and most consistant manner, you will need to simplify the release motion first. Then once you develop the consistancy, you can work on cupping the wrist for more power.
During the swing, try to keep your thumb at a 1 oclock position. At the bottom of the swing when the ball is at the heel of your left foot, rotate your thumb towards 10 oclock as the ball rolls off of your hand. This will impart side rotation and help keep you from spining the ball and not wanting your swing to come in front of you as well. You will want to follow through towards the pins in the direction of your target. Just keep your wrist firm for now.
Good luck,
