Bowling - bowling ball release

Expert: stevie lange - 1/7/2005

Question
I have always used plastic balls to bowl with, and thrown straight.I recently bought a reactive ball that hooks.Am I supposed to release this ball the same way I do the plastic ones? Or do I need to release it differently? Thank you.

Answer
HI TIM,
Although reactives of today are made to hook, you will still have to put a little hand into it to turn it. This is better as a lesson one on one, but here is a little primer. Picture a clock dial , 12:00 being on top and 6:00 on the bottom. try to keep your hand and fingers under the ball, this puts your fingers at 6:00 and your thumb at 12:00 on the clock dial. At the point of release, your thumb exits first and then rotate JUST your hand slighty inward so that your fingers end up at around 3:00 at the top of the follow thru,. but no further. also make sure that you shoot your thumb straight up like you are driving it thru the ceiling and that your forearm is flat and pointed at your target. Over turning your hand  is not disirable here because it will cause the ball to spin like a top. this takes some practice , but with a little time and practice, your scores will sure to improve. also on storm's site there is a video available that explains this very well.

good luck!
