Bowling/To hook or not to hook

QuestionHi Chip-
I'm a new bowler, and find that I use a "straight" ball delivery (palm facing forward the entire time, no spin or hook). My scores are sub-100, and I'm wondering if you think it would be worth trying to develop a hook delivery? I've heard that ultimately, a proper hook delivery provides for more pin action, and subsequently more pins "downed". If so, what's the best way to develop a "natural" hook? Finally, will the kind of ball I buy be determined on what kind of delivery I have? Thanks very much for your time...
AnswerThe reason everyone wants to throw some type of hook is added angle of entry into the pins. This produces less deflection which results in more pin action.
There is not a ball made that hooks by itself, but different types will react differently to the rotation applied to the ball. I would suggest going with a solid coverstock entry level type of ball. Ebonite Tornado Warning, Storm Big Hit, Columbia Scout are three options.
The best way to try and develop a hook is to hold your hand with the fingers at 4oclock and the thumb at 10oclock. As you get used to this, you can then start by holding your fingers at 6oclock and rotating them to 4oclock during the release.
Good luck,
Chip
