i just ordered a dynothane element au79 with pin placement at 1 1/2 - 2 and top weight at 2.5 - 3.5. how will the pin placement affect the ball from the recommened 2-3 inches?

There wont by much difference in the 2 pin distances you mention.  If you had on that was 1-2 and the other 2-3, the 1-2 will have a bit smoother transition than the 2-3.  If I am looking for a ball that will roll smoother and be more forgiving, I will choose one with a smaller pin and Cg distance.  You will not have quite as many layout options with the smaller pin and CG distance, but all can be drilled for several different ball reactions.  I am sure you will be fine with it and perfectly happy.
