Question
Hello!  I have a 7 month old male Boxer puppy (intact) that is highly energetic!  He loves to run around and play with other dogs.  He is very socialized and loves to go to the dog park.  I would like to know if it's ok to run with my dog.  I have read varying things about how long you have to wait before you can start jogging with a puppy due to their bones.  I have jogged with him numerous times already up to 2.7 miles, at times in off-leash areas.  He does trot some of the time and will also sprint ahead some of the time as well.  Even after I stop, he's still ready to keep going.  I'm worried about hurting his bones or making him more prone to arthritis.  How far is too far for his age?  Should I not run with him at all until he's at least 12 months?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Nancy. I would wait until he's fully grown before doing any serious running with him. For now, keep it to a minimum, maybe 10 minute jogs. Better yet, why not make it a really long walk for now? :-) I know about their energy! It's like 3 toddlers in one furry body sometimes. lol Let him play with the other dogs, run around the yard. Sometimes, we have to hold them back to help them in the long run. For now, find other ways to expend his energy. In no time flat, he'll be ready to run with you! I'd wait until he's atleast a year old before running him on hard pavement. Hope this helps!

Education/Credentials
I took a two semester course to become a vet assistant. I didn't go further in it because I had a child.
