Question
I have a 2 year old female 3lb Chihuahua. She has gone thru two heat cycles -about six months apart- from this I expected her to be in heat again by the begining of December. It is now mid Jan and still no signs of her going into the cycle. Could this be unhealthy for her.

Answer
Hi Chris. Some girls take awhile to get their cycles straight, like human females do. Was she bred on any of her previous cycles? If so, that may have something to do with it. Some dogs will cycle a tab bit later than normal after whelping. If she wasn't, then I'd wait another month or so before I got too worried. If she still doesn't go into heat in a few months, then you can take her in to the vet to have a few simple tests run to try to figure out what's going on. Good luck!

I have owned Boxers for twelve years, and have bred them for eight. I also took a vet assistance course just for my dogs. I have shown in dogs shows, just not a lot.

Education/Credentials
I took a two semester course to become a vet assistant. I didn't go further in it because I had a child.
