Boxers/10 month old boxer
Expert: Jannie Balliett - 2/17/2008
QuestionMy nephews 10 month old boxer just started peeing on the couch and bed. This has just been going on for 2 weeks now, but long enough. I suggested it may be anxiety. He has done it in front of them and when they have not been in the room with him. note:He was lost for a day during the Christmas holiday. Don't know whether this is causing a problem.
AnswerThere could be related variables in this behavior.
The being lost was obviously one, or could effect it. He has an instilled fear that will happen again. It's just like a wild dog that scraps for food will be a glutton for life even after adopted and fed properly.
The past 2 weeks is an awful long time after the being lost Christmas, to have started this behavior. I would assume he would have began the peeing right after returning home.
Has anything changed in the household? Work hours or days? Anyone move in or out? Another dog or cat added recently? There are variables...
He is still young, so his behavior can vary if not persistent with his training and family life.
Your nephew and his family must have and maintain a routine religiously.
When he eats, take him out to use the bathroom within 5-10 minutes of eating EVERY TIME. Between meals, take him out EVERY 30-45 minutes. He is still a pup and drinks lots of water anyway. Take him out to use the bathroom before everyone goes to bed for the night faithfully.
Do not leave him alone unattended. If everyone works-- he can not be left alone all day unattended. There must be someone there to care for him and take him out regularly. If not, then make provisions for him in a closed bedroom for food and water and a place to relieve himself since he is unattended.
When he pees on the couch, leash him immediately and take him outside whether he pees outside or not. Scold him in a firm (not mean or yelling) voice (never spank) and tell him "bad--XXX-- NO-- bad" <-- his name. Be consistent with the chastising and routine.
You might get a pee-repellant and spray on the sofa and area too.
Consistently and routine, lots of love and time spent with him to assure him he is loved and everything is alright, playing time and loving calm. quiet family time is important.
