Question
what are the main causes of low red cell counts and are there any alternative treatments.

Answer
Geoff,

There are so many possible causes of low red cell counts, and treatment will vary depending on the cause.  It could be something as simple as an iron deficiency in the diet or worms (hooks and whips especially), or something as complex as cancer.  This really requires a veterinary evaluation, and if you've had one and aren't getting answers, I'd go for a second opinion, perhaps to a University animal hospital if there is one in the area.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but there are just too many variables here!

Good luck.
