Question
I recently bought a 8 week old boxer. I noticed he had some spots on his head that looked like mange. I did the research and took him to the vet. And sure enough it was demodex mange. We have started the process of the dips and treatment for him. He will have his second dip on 9/9/08. It has become very costly and stressfull on us. We where woundering if anyone had any advice for us, or someone that has been threw it. what are some signs he is doing better.. how long will this go on? and will he ever overcome this nasty mite!!

Answer
Hi Brian. If this is localized, meaning 5 spots or less, then you shouldn't have to do anything for it, it usually clears itself up. The thing about demodex is that it's about the immune system, so you can try to boost it by giving Vitamin E. This can take awhile to cure, you may be looking at a few months before it starts to clear up. If an animal has the localized form and is to be used in a breeding program, then the dog shouldn't be treated for it, you should just watch it and see if the dog clears himself up from this. It's not too common to see this in this young of a puppy. If he only has a few spots, then you really don't have to dip him. You can wait to see if it turns into the generalized form. Also, 8 weeks is a bit young to be going through the dip. You can try Goodwinol ointment instead as long as the spots aren't crusted or itchy. If the dog itches a lot, he may need to be put on antibiotics to help with any skin infection.

I took a two semester course to become a vet assistant. I didn't go further in it because I had a child.
